A lot of people actually aspire to become an architect themselves, but like with any other profession out there, many are called but few are actually chosen. That is because not a lot of people have the essential skills that are required by this multi-faceted role.
That being said, whether you want to create your own architecture company or join a well-established firm, you need to be having these essential skills if you want to become a really good architect:
1. Creative Skills
Architecture mainly revolves around designing a building and making sure that the homebuilders are able to put everything together to make your designs come to life.
That being said, you need to be creative in the sense that you have the flair for the artistic, while also ensuring that everything is functional as well.
Some people might be creative, but they lack the technical aspect. That is why above all else, you need to be creative to start with.
2. Numerical Skills
Architects should also have amazing mathematical skills. They should mainly focus on Geometry and advanced algebra as these two subjects can really help architects progress through their careers. Thankfully, these subjects are offered pretty much in every school that offers BS Architecture courses.
3. Knowledge of Legal Concepts
In every city or country, there are always some regulations and building codes that architects must adhere to. Failure to comply would result in the closure of the building, simply because the structure is deemed unsafe based on the standards that were set.
Despite the fact that not a lot of buildings nowadays gets surveyed by the city’s surveyor, it is still important that you ensure that all safety standards are met so that you won’t have a headache down the line.
4. Good Communication Skills
An architect not only takes care of the actual design of the building, but they will also have to liaise with other people as well, such as construction managers, lawyers, contractors, local government officials, structural engineers, tradesman, among many others.
Having good communication skills is part of the core abilities that every good architect should have.
5. Ability to Work with a Team
Aside from having good communication skills, an architect must also have the ability to work with other people. For instance, you will converse with your construction team to ensure that they adhere to the designs that you have created for the building.
Or perhaps, you can work with the client in making sure that their needs are met, all while you take care of the design and the functional aspects of the building.
6. Commercial Awareness
Although this may sound like a buzzword that anyone could put in a CV, it is actually one of the most important skills that a good architect must possess.
They should be able to know the many industries out there so that they can adhere to what is commonly used in the sector, as well as making sure that you adhere to all of the safety standards as well.
7. Problem-Solving Skills
What separates the good architect from a bad one? Well, anyone lacking the aforementioned skills is definitely considered one, but actually not having good problem-solving skills is definitely considered a ‘bad’ architect.
You see, despite the fact that you think you have everything under the control, there are just some things that could possibly go wrong. But, being able to bounce back and ensure that everything is still in working order (by changing some things that are necessary) is an important skill that future and current architects must have.
8. Attention to Detail
Lastly, every architect should have a good attentional to detail. Just one poorly conceived aspect of a building could jeopardize the entire structure. Having a keen eye for what is deemed as correct is important.
